What is Design?
What is the design? If you search for the meaning of it, it's defined 'to plan and fashion artistically or skillfully.' Thinking about what to plan and how it is to make everything in human life beautiful and efficient. For example, humans invented a bed to sleep in. In order to see the best efficiency in it, we have created the design of the bed that we commonly think of. Like this skillful design is scientifically designed for human goals and use. Going back to our example, when we search on the internet to buy a bed, we can see a wide variety of beds. Although the basic form is similar, you can find beds of various colors, shapes, and materials. These factors don't have a big impact on our sleep. However, since humans have an aesthetic sense, they prefer artistic designs that are beautifully decorated rather than simply enhancing the efficiency of the object. Like this, all objects may differ in degree, but they all have an efficient and artistic design form.
What is Craft?
If you look up the meaning of it, it says 'to make or manufacture (an object or product) with skill and careful attention to detail.' In other words, it's the work of making the design reality. However, not all works become crafts at this progress. The process is as follows. Design is made through our imagination. After endless abstractions, such as what it would look like if it were produced in this form, and then we start to embody it, we use variety of materials and techniques to realize designs in reality. At this time, craftsmanship refers to items made with meticulous care, seeking functionality and decoration through technology. (Not randomly manufactured designs.) In other words, craft is the skillful manufacturing of products by human beings with great care. This careful attention can be seen as considering the functionality and decorativeness of objects.
What is Art?
At the dictionary it is judged as ‘the quality, production, expression, or realm of things that conform to accepted aesthetic principles of beauty, show imagination and skill, and have more than ordinary meaning and importance'. In other words, it can be seen as everything in a meaningful, realized design. However, not only objects manufactured but also expressions are included. It can be seen as very subjective because the standards for giving values and beauty are different. However, for an object or expression to be classified as an art, it must be meaningful culturally and be ethically acceptable to most people. For example, none of us will admit criminal activity as art even if the criminal defines it as art. In short, we define activities, technologies, and objects that contain all meanings that are not contrary to universal ethics as art.
Personal Biography
I'm Kim Hyunsoo, 22 years old and born in Korea. I've graduated elementary, middle, and high school in Korea and am currently a student at uop. At the age of 19, I faced the biggest problem in my life, whether to prepare for university in Korea or study abroad. In Korea, the majority of students value university over department, and so did I. But no matter how much I thought about whether I could endure studying something I wasn't interested in, the answer was no. Studying abroad was a completely new challenge for me, since I had no living experience in a foreign country. However, no matter how much I thought about it, it seemed that I couldn't study what I wasn't interested in, so I decided to come here. I was a media x student when I came here but it didn’t feel like it was my thing. So, I decided to take a year off to find out what I really wanted to do. After spending time with careful consideration, I changed my major to art.
